SF Toy Photography Tips

I just recently did some proper toy photography attempts with some of my SF figures.  I'm a bit of a newbie with toy photography.  And have had some lessons learned (or is it snafus? Lol!) that I'd like to share.  I'll add some more along the way should I have new snafus to share.  Haha!

1. When taking pics of figures, if they have whiskers, make sure the whiskers are straightened out.

As sometimes a whisker might be curved/bent downwards and sticks to the clothing and it's barely noticeable until you check out your photos later on a bigger screen/view and see the darn thing. Lol!

See my shot here of a figure with bent whisker.  I hadn't noticed it at all while taking pics of one of my favourite figures.  It was to be my avatar photo in the forum.

Needless to say I didn't bother retaking the shot/s.  Good thing it's just sort of like a portrait shot only, not for a story, so the image need not be big enough onscreen and the bent whisker therefore isn't noticeable as well.  Lol.

2.  Proper lighting is best but also don't knock yourself out too much madly adjusting your camera settings or light as the photos can always be brightened up some more via image/photo editing software.

Believe me I thought this'd use up more time but I find it takes more time doing the lighting and camera settings adjustments during actual photography than just quickly sliding a light/bright scale for the image on the software then save the brightened shot.

So once you sit down to check out the pics, do the editing at the same time so it's all done quickly in one go.

3.  If you're a stickler with the figures being in their complete/correct clothing/accessory, then always be familiar first with their complete look.

I was taking pictures with the costumed babies from the JP Toys R'Us Fairy Tree set and I thought I had it all on hand as they were bought in their complete and correct costumes.

However, for the Halloween scenes with which I shot photos of them, I made some of them wear the party hats.  One baby (the winged one) had her own tiara or is it antenna(?) (see shot of her above at left, when I received the toy delivery) and I hadn't remembered that.  Later as I was clearing the items from the tabletop out of the way after doing the photography, I saw the forlorn tiara by the side and realized that as I took off the halloween hat off her in some of my shots of it, that I also inadvertently removed the tiara while doing so.  So as you can see here, she doesn't come with the tiara but should've.

And I hadn't noticed it 'til after I saw the tiara lying about on the tabletop I shot the scenes with after the work was done.  hehe.  Good thing she's still cute enough to get away with it in the pic if one's clueless about it (but still best with the tiara.. pfft).  Lol!
